The R&D Scientist leads superconductor development projects and helps our production team achieve product quality and manufacturing efficiency improvements. We work with a diverse, global customer base from industry and government that seeks state of the art Nb-Ti and Nb3Sn superconductors for innovative magnet projects. This is a high profile/ industry visible position at a manufacturing firm with a worldwide reputation for excellence.

 

Please note this position is an on-site role.    

Responsibilities

Key Job Functions:

  • Lead low and high temperature superconducting materials technology and product development projects, particularly in the Nb-Ti and Nb3Sn systems
  • Manage superconducting wire project milestones, deadlines, and budgets, utilizing formal tools and approaches g. FMEA, Agile project management, etc.
  • Interface with suppliers and customers to build relationships and resolve technical issues related to the fabrication and use of our products Occasional travel to vendors and customers.
  • Develop and maintain proficiency with the processes and technical details necessary for successful superconducting wire manufacture, including acid and clean room practices, extrusion, rod and wire drawing, non-destructive testing (eddy current testing), failure analysis, and heat treatment furnace design and programming.
  • Use metallography and microscopy (light and SEM) to analyze and troubleshoot superconducting wire design
  • Authors technical papers, documents and reports. Follows and understands the literature on superconducting wire.
  • Hands-on supervision and manufacture of superconducting strand (occasional work in a factory environment is required). Directs activities of R&D technicians in the fabrication and testing of suoerconductinq strand.
  • Authors work instructions and work orders for production and R&D
  • Assists production department with product quality and effective manufacturing
  • Assists cryogenic test lab with issues related to maintenance, diagnoses and repair of superconducting magnets and measurement systems. Performs occasional electromagnetic testing of superconducting strand.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in materials science or a related discipline
  • Experience in applied superconductivity
  • Previous user of superconducting magnet or other cryogenic systems
  • Experience with metallographic sample preparations for Light and SEM microscopy
  • A proven record of new technology and/or product development, including publications in the technical literature
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
  • Ability to distil information and data from multiple sources, to create a focus on root cause resolution of complex problems.
  • High competency with computers, electronics for measurement and data collection, and materials science analytical tools and techniques.
  • Experience in a lean manufacturing environment is highly desired. 
  • Typical office environment with time spent on the manufacturing floor and in labs
  • Physical requirements of the job include ability to sit or stand for prolonged periods of time, ability to routinely utilize hands/fingers and arms to type on a keyboard and manipulate materials. Must be able to lift or move objects weighing up to 40 pounds on occasion. Reasonable accommodations will be provided to support individuals with disabilities in performing essential job functions.
  • The job will require occasional domestic and international travel by car or air
  • Must have permanent residency status in the US or be a citizen.  No sponsorship can be provided for this position. 

At Bruker, the base salary is part of our total compensation. The estimated base salary range for this full-time position is between $86,400 and $125,000 and provides an opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base salary for the role will depend on several job-related factors, including, but not limited to, education, training, experience, the geographic location of the successful candidate, skills, competencies, job-related knowledge, and travel requirements for this position.
